Early Life and Education

James Scales was born in Delaware County, Oklahoma. His parents were John Grover Scales, Senior, and Katie Scales. His father was a Baptist pastor. James had one brother, John Grover, Junior.

James Scales went to Oklahoma Baptist University for his college studies. He earned his first degree in 1939 and a master's degree in 1941.

Service in World War II

After college, James Scales joined the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II from 1942 to 1945. For his brave service, he received special awards and honors.

A Career in Education

After the war, James Scales began his long career in higher education.

  • He started as a professor, teaching from 1947 to 1961.
  • In 1950, he moved into university leadership.
  • He became a vice president, then an executive vice president.
  • From 1961 to 1965, he served as the president of Oklahoma Baptist University. This was the same university where he had studied.

Leading at Oklahoma State University

In 1965, Scales moved to Oklahoma State University. There, he became the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He also taught political science. While living in Oklahoma, he was involved in politics. He was part of the Democratic Party.

President of Wake Forest University

In 1967, James Scales became the eleventh president of Wake Forest University. He led the university for many years, until 1983. During his time as president:

  • More students joined the university.
  • The school added more study programs.
  • He helped build a new center for fine arts. This building was later named the James R. Scales Fine Arts Center in his honor.
  • He also helped Wake Forest get two special houses overseas. These were Worrell House in London, England, and Casa Artom in Venice, Italy. These houses allowed students to study abroad.

Family Life

James Scales was married to Elizabeth Ann (Randel) Scales, who was known as Betty Ann. She was born in Osage County, Oklahoma. Betty Ann also graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1939.

Betty Ann was very active in college and community groups. She and James had two daughters:

  • Ann C. Scales: She became a well-known lawyer.
  • Laura Elizabeth Scales: She passed away at a young age in 1969.

Betty Ann Scales passed away on August 11, 1992.
