James Sinclair, 12th Earl of Caithness (1766–1823) was an important Scottish noble. He was the 12th Earl of Caithness and the chief of the Clan Sinclair, a well-known Scottish family from the Highlands.

James Sinclair was born on May 31, 1766. His birthplace was Barrogill Castle, which is now known as Castle of Mey. His father was Sir John Sinclair of Mey. When his father passed away in 1774, James took over his father's title as a Baronet.

In 1789, James became the 12th Earl of Caithness. He was the closest male relative to William Sinclair, 2nd Earl of Caithness. The House of Lords, a part of the British Parliament, confirmed his right to this important title.

Important Roles and Public Service

In 1811, James Sinclair received a significant position. He was named the Deputy Postmaster General of Scotland. This role meant he helped manage the mail and postal services across Scotland. He held this job until his death in 1823.

He also served in other important ways. James was the Lord-Lieutenant of the county of Caithness. This meant he represented the King or Queen in that area. He also served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Ross-shire militia, which was a local military force.

Family Life

James Sinclair married Jane Campbell on January 2, 1784. Their wedding took place at Thurso Castle. Jane was the second daughter of Alexander Campbell, who was a deputy governor at Fort George.

James and Jane had several children together:

  • John Sinclair, Lord Berriedale, who sadly passed away in 1802 at age 14.
  • Alexander Sinclair, who later became the 13th Earl of Caithness.
  • Four other sons and three daughters.
