James Somerville, 6th Lord Somerville facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Somerville, the 6th Lord Somerville, lived from about 1518 to 1569. He was an important member of the Parliament of Scotland. His father was Hugh Somerville, 5th Lord Somerville, and his mother was Jonet Maitland.

Working with Mary of Guise

In 1554, James Somerville wrote to Mary of Guise. She was the Queen Regent, meaning she ruled Scotland for her young daughter. James asked her to excuse his family from a tax his father owed.

Later, in 1560, James joined other Scottish nobles. They signed an agreement to support the Scottish Reformation. This was a big change in the country's religion. They also wanted to remove French soldiers who were helping Mary of Guise. To do this, they planned to team up with the English army.

Soon after, James signed a document approving the Treaty of Berwick. This treaty allowed the English army to come and help the Scottish nobles. The English were already trying to capture Leith, a town in Scotland.

Supporting Mary, Queen of Scots

James Somerville later became a strong supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots. When she was held in England, he signed letters asking for her freedom.

In July 1568, he and other Scottish lords wrote to Elizabeth I of England. They asked Queen Elizabeth to release Mary. They hoped they would not have to ask other European leaders for help.

Just two days later, they wrote to the Duke of Alba. He was a powerful Spanish leader. They hoped Spain would help free Mary.

When Queen Elizabeth did not reply, James signed another letter in August 1568. The Scottish lords had lost their chance to act. This was because Elizabeth had convinced Mary to tell them not to stop the Scottish Parliament by force. Now, they asked for Mary to be put back on her throne. If not, they wanted her released to France or Scotland.

His Family Life

James Somerville was married twice. His first wife was Jean Hamilton. They married in 1529. Jean was the daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran. Her father gave her a dowry (money or property) of £886-13s-4d in his will.
