Major James St Clair, 14th Lord Sinclair (born July 3, 1803 – died October 24, 1880) was a Scottish nobleman. He was also a Scottish representative peer, which meant he represented Scotland in the British Parliament. Before his political career, he served as a soldier.
Early Life
James St Clair was born on July 3, 1803. He was the oldest son of Charles St Clair, 13th Lord Sinclair. His mother was Mary Agnes Chisholm.
When his father passed away in 1863, James inherited the title of Lord Sinclair. This title had been officially recognized for his family by the House of Lords in 1782.
His Career and Public Service
James St Clair began his military career in 1822. He joined the Grenadier Guards as an Ensign, which is a junior officer rank.
He was promoted to Lieutenant and Captain in 1826. The next year, in 1827, he became a Major in the 92nd Foot regiment.
Later, Lord Sinclair became a politician. From 1868 until his death in 1880, he served in the House of Lords. He was a Scottish representative peer, representing Scotland as a member of the Conservative Party.
Family Life
On September 14, 1830, James St Clair married Jane Little. She was the oldest daughter of Archibald Little. Together, they had six children:
- Charles William St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair (1831–1922): He later inherited his father's title.
- Archibald St Clair (1833–1872): He became a Commander in the Royal Navy.
- James Chisholm St Clair (1837–1902): He worked in the Madras Civil Service in India.
- Lockhart Matthew St Clair (1855–1930): He also worked in India for the government.
- Mary Agnes St Clair (born 1840)
- Helen St Clair (1842–1849): She passed away when she was young.
Lord Sinclair died on October 24, 1880. His oldest son, Charles, then became the 15th Lord Sinclair. His wife, Jane, passed away a few years later, on June 17, 1887.
