James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1500s. He was a courtier, meaning he worked closely with the royal family. He also owned a lot of land.
Early Life and Family
James was the son of John Stewart, 4th Lord Innermeath. His mother was Elizabeth Beaton. His family had a long history in Scotland.
He had a younger brother named John Stewart of Baldynneis. John was known for writing poems. James also had a half-sister, Jean Stewart, who became the Countess of Argyll.
Becoming Lord Innermeath
James became the Lord Innermeath in 1579. This happened after his father passed away. The place called Innermeath is now known as Invermay. It is located in an area of Scotland called Strathearn.
A Claim to Power
In July 1582, James Stewart made an important claim. He said his family had always held a special role. This role was called the Colonelship of the Sherrifdom of Perth. This meant his family had certain rights and duties in that area.
However, Patrick Lord Drummond challenged James's claim. Lord Drummond even took away James's court documents. This happened at the Market Cross of Dunblane.
His Passing
James Stewart passed away on 14 February 1586.
His Family
James Stewart married Helen Ogilvy. She was the daughter of James, 4th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie. They had several children together:
- John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (1566–1603): He became the 1st Earl of Atholl. He married twice. His first wife was Margaret Lindsay. His second wife was Marie Ruthven.
- Robert Stewart: He worked for the Earl of Moray, who had been killed. In 1592, Robert tried to get revenge on the Earl of Huntly. He dressed in Highlandman's clothes for this attempt in Perth.
- Katherine Stewart: She married William Ruthven of Ballindean. She was the mother of Patrick Ruthven, 1st Earl of Forth.
