Invermay (i/ˌɪnvərˈmeɪ/) is a small settlement in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It is located about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) southeast of Forteviot. Invermay is also found about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Perth, right by a river called the Water of May.
Invermay's Historical Journey
Long ago, before the mid-1400s, Invermay was known by a different name: Innermeath. This was an important place for a powerful family, the Stewarts.
The Stewart Family of Innermeath
Sir John Stewart of Innermeath lived here. His older son became the first Lord of Lorne, a very important title. His younger son was known as The Black Knight of Lorn. He was a strong leader in the 1400s and was connected to another powerful family, the Black Douglases. Both sons were born at Innermeath.
Later, Sir John's grandson, William Stewart, gave up the Lordship of Lorne. In return, he was made the first Lord Innermeath. This new title ended in 1625. By this time, the name of the area had changed from Innermeath to Invermay.
The Ancient Cross of Invermay
An old stone cross, from the early Middle Ages, once stood in Invermay. This cross was destroyed in the 1700s. A new, modern stone was put in its place. Pieces of the original cross are now thought to be in the porch of Forteviot church.
