James T. Johnston

James Thomas Johnston (born January 19, 1839 – died July 19, 1904) was an important figure from Indiana. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was elected to speak for his state in the United States Congress.

Early Life and Education

James Johnston was born near Greencastle, Indiana, in 1839. As a young person, he went to the regular schools in his area. After finishing school, he decided to study law, learning everything he needed to become a lawyer.

Military Service in the Civil War

When the Civil War began, James Johnston joined the army to serve his country. This was a very big war in the United States between the northern states and the southern states.

Joining the Union Army

In July 1862, James joined the army as a private, which is a regular soldier. He was part of Company C, Sixth Indiana Cavalry. Later, in September 1863, he moved to Company A, Eighth Tennessee Cavalry. There, he became a second lieutenant, which is an officer's rank. He served in this role until January 1864, when he left the army.

Later War Service

Even after leaving, James continued to serve. He worked as a commissary sergeant for the One Hundred and Thirty-third Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. This meant he was in charge of food and supplies for his unit. He then became a lieutenant and assistant quartermaster for the One Hundred and Forty-ninth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. In this role, he helped manage supplies and housing for the soldiers. He officially left the army in September 1865.

Career in Law and Politics

After the war, James Johnston started his career as a lawyer and became involved in politics.

Becoming a Lawyer

In March 1866, James was officially allowed to practice law. This is called being "admitted to the bar." He then started his law practice in Rockville, Indiana.

Serving in Government

James Johnston quickly became active in public service.

  • From 1866 to 1868, he worked as a prosecuting attorney. This means he was a lawyer who worked for the government to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes.
  • In 1868, he was elected to the State house of representatives. This is part of Indiana's state government where new laws are discussed and made.
  • He then served in the State senate from 1874 to 1878. This is another important part of the state government that helps create laws.

Serving in Congress

James Johnston was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses. He served as a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1889. After his time in Congress, he tried to be re-elected but was not successful.

Later Life and Legacy

After his time in Congress, James Johnston went back to working as a lawyer. In 1893, he became the Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Indiana. This was a group for Union Army veterans who fought in the Civil War.

James Thomas Johnston passed away in Rockville, Indiana, on July 19, 1904. He was buried in the Rockville Cemetery.
