Jamesport's Location

Jamesport is a place with a total area of about 11.7 square kilometers (4.5 square miles). Most of this area, about 11.6 square kilometers (4.5 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square kilometers (0.04 square miles), is water.

Jamesport's Past

Early Settlement and Name Changes

Jamesport was first settled a long time ago, in the 1690s. It was originally called "Aquebogue." Later, it was renamed "Lower Aquebogue" when another community nearby was called "Upper Aquebogue."

The Jamesport Meeting House, built in 1731, is a very old building. It's the oldest church building that is still used in Suffolk County.

How Jamesport Got Its Name

The name "Jamesport" comes from a man named James Tuthill. He moved with his family to the area in 1833. This area was south of Lower Aquebogue, near the Peconic Bay. Over time, Lower Aquebogue became known as Jamesport. The community that was previously called Jamesport, about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south, became known as South Jamesport. Upper Aquebogue is now simply called Aquebogue.

Whaling, Resorts, and Fishing

James Tuthill tried to start a business for whaling and shipping on the Peconic Bay. This was in what is now South Jamesport. However, it didn't work out because the water in the Bay was too shallow for big ships at low tide.

Later, the Long Island Rail Road started train service between Jamesport and New York City. This made Jamesport a popular place for vacations. Many large hotels were built along the bay, like the Miamogue Hotel. These hotels were popular until 1952. Jamesport also became a busy fishing community. It was known for catching scallops and bunker (a type of fish called menhaden).

Community Gatherings

From the 1830s until around 1950, Jamesport was a place where the Methodist Episcopal Church held special outdoor meetings. After 1904, it also hosted a summer camp for young people called the Epworth League Fresh Air Camp.

Nuclear Power Plant Plans

In the 1960s, a company called the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) looked at land near Jamesport. They thought about building another nuclear power station there. They already had one being built called the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant. However, the plan for Jamesport was stopped. This happened because LILCO faced a lot of opposition to their Shoreham plant in the 1970s and 1980s.
