Jamestown's Past: A Look at Its History
Early Days and the Refinery
Jamestown started to grow because of an oil refinery. The El Paso Natural Gas Company built this refinery near the Continental Divide in New Mexico. People often called it the Gallup Refinery or the Ciniza Refinery.
In 1964, the Shell Oil Company bought the refinery from El Paso Gas. Later, in 1982, Giant Oil Refining took over the refinery from Shell.
Growth of the Community
In 1987, Giant Oil Refining built a very large truck stop. This truck stop was one of the biggest in their whole chain. It was located about a mile south of the refinery.
On June 7, 2003, Giant sold this travel center to Pilot Travel Centers. Today, Pilot Travel Center #305 is home to Jamestown's post office. This post office uses the ZIP code 87347.
In 1993, the community of Jamestown mainly had just two main places: the truck stop and the oil refinery. By 2020, a Fire Department had also been built. The oil refinery changed owners several times. Its last owner, Marathon Petroleum, planned to close it by October 2020.
