Jan Jakob Lodewijk ten Kate (born December 23, 1819 – died December 24, 1889) was a Dutch pastor, writer, and poet. He was known for his many poems and for translating famous works from other languages into Dutch.

Jan Jakob Lodewijk ten Kate was born in The Hague, a city in the Netherlands. When he was young, he worked as a clerk for a lawyer.
However, a friend named Dr. Heldring, who was a pastor, saw that Jan Jakob had a special talent for poetry. Dr. Heldring helped him go to the University of Utrecht to study theology. This is the study of religious faith and practice. He studied there from 1838 to 1843.
After finishing his studies, Ten Kate became a pastor himself. He worked in different cities, including Middelburg and Amsterdam. While working as a pastor, he was also very busy writing. He wrote both prose (like stories and essays) and poetry. Some of his prose writings included travel stories and religious thoughts.
