Jan des Bouvrie (born August 3, 1942 – died October 4, 2020) was a famous Dutch designer. He created furniture, interiors, and products. He is most known for his "kubusbank sofa" from 1969. This sofa is now seen as a design classic, meaning it's a timeless and important piece of design.
Jan des Bouvrie also taught at different design schools. A design college in Deventer, called the Jan des Bouvrie Academy, is named after him.

Jan des Bouvrie's Life and Work
Jan des Bouvrie was born in Naarden, a town in the Netherlands, on August 3, 1942. When he was sixteen, after finishing high school, he went to the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. This is a famous art and design school.
Later, he opened his own shop in Naarden where he designed interiors. He even had his own TV show called TV Woonmagazine. He also designed rooms for the Floris Suite Hotel. He gave them a special "Dutch colonial style with Caribbean temperament."
Developing His Unique Design Style
Jan des Bouvrie's unique ideas about design grew while he was at the Rietveld Academy. His fresh and modern ideas quickly made a big impact in the design world. He worked with many companies, like Linteloo, Dutch Originals, and Gelderland.
In 1969, Gelderland was the first company to produce one of his designs. This was the "kubusbank sofa," which became a very famous design. It's still loved today!
His Studio at 'Het Arsenaal'
In 1993, Jan des Bouvrie moved his design studio to a special building. It was the old arsenal of the Naarden fortress. An arsenal is a place where weapons or military equipment are stored.
He worked with his partner, Monique, to turn this historic building into a beautiful showroom. Here, people could see all his amazing designs.
Awards and Recognition
Over the years, Jan des Bouvrie won many awards for his designs. In 1974, he received the Culture Prize. He also won the Style Prize in 1990 and the Furniture Prize in 1999.
He also shared his ideas in many books about interior design. In 2009, he was made a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a special honor given for great achievements in art and design.
Jan des Bouvrie's Family Life
Jan des Bouvrie was married to Monique des Bouvrie, who is also an interior designer. They had two children together. He also had two older children from a previous marriage, and many grandchildren.
Jan des Bouvrie passed away in Naarden on October 4, 2020. He was 78 years old.
