Jane Bowles was born in New York City on February 22, 1917. She grew up in Woodmere, New York. As a child, she had a problem with her knee. When she was a teenager, she fell off a horse and broke it.
After surgery, she developed a type of arthritis. Her mother took her to Switzerland for treatment. There, Jane attended a boarding school. She also went to high schools in New York and Massachusetts. During these years, she became very interested in books and writing.
Personal Life and Marriage
In 1937, Jane met the composer and writer Paul Bowles. They got married in 1938. Their honeymoon trip inspired the setting for her first novel. In 1948, Jane moved to Tangier, Morocco, to join Paul.

Jane Bowles published her novel Two Serious Ladies in 1943. Her writing style was unique and well-liked by many.
