Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn (born Jane Erin Emmet in 1873; died 20 February 1961) was an American artist. She was known for her beautiful figure paintings and portraits. Jane came from a very artistic family, with many relatives who were also famous painters.

Jane's Family and Early Life

Jane Emmet de Glehn was born in 1873 in New Rochelle, New York. She was the youngest of ten children! Many of her family members were very talented. Her older sisters, Rosina Emmet Sherwood and Lydia Field Emmet, became successful artists, just like their cousin Ellen Emmet Rand.

Jane's family also included famous engineers and military heroes. Her brother, William LeRoy Emmet, was a brilliant engineer who worked for General Electric. He helped create new ways to generate electricity. Another brother, Robert Temple Emmet, was a brave soldier who received the Medal of Honor. Her brother Devereux Emmet designed over 150 golf courses around the world.

Starting Her Art Career

Jane Emmet began her art journey by studying at the Art Students League of New York. This was a famous art school in New York City. Later, she traveled to Paris, France, to learn from another artist named Frederick William MacMonnies. She also explored Europe to see the amazing artworks of the "Grand Masters." These were very famous artists from the past.

Marriage and Artistic Adventures

After returning to America, Jane met and married a talented British painter named Wilfrid de Glehn in 1904. They got married in New Rochelle, New York. After their wedding, they went on a honeymoon to Cornwall, England. They also visited Paris and Venice, which are beautiful cities in Europe. Eventually, they made their home in Chelsea, London, England.

In England, Jane kept drawing and painting. She showed her art at important exhibitions like the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy. She used different materials for her art, including chalk, charcoal, and oil paints.

Traveling with a Famous Painter

Jane and Wilfrid became good friends with the famous American painter John Singer Sargent. Jane had actually met Sargent many years before, in 1890. Between 1905 and 1914, the three artists often traveled together across Europe. They would even paint each other's portraits during their trips!

When World War I started, Jane and Wilfrid both helped out. In 1915, they worked at a British hospital in France that cared for French soldiers. The next year, Wilfrid joined the army and went to fight in Italy. After the war ended, they returned to England. Wilfrid had art shows in London and New York. For the next ten years, they spent their summers in Cornwall and their winters in France.

Later Life and Legacy

Unlike some of her sisters and her husband, Jane Emmet de Glehn didn't create as many artworks. After 1913, she usually showed her paintings alongside her husband's. In the 1930s and 1940s, Jane had an art studio in New York City. In 1940, she even had an art show with her sister, Lydia Field Emmet. Like her sisters, Jane mostly enjoyed painting portraits of people.

After her husband Wilfrid passed away in 1951, Jane spent a lot of her time sketching her family and friends. Jane and Wilfrid did not have any children. She died in 1961.

A Family of Artists

In 2007, a special art show was held in New York City. It featured paintings from five generations of the talented Emmet women! The exhibit included 130 artworks by 14 different artists from Jane's family. It showed how artistic talent ran through their family for many years.
