Meet Jane Long: A Climate Leader
Understanding Earth's Climate
Dr. Jane Long is known for her work in understanding and solving big environmental problems. At the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, she was a Principal Associate Director. This meant she helped guide many important science programs. These programs included studying Earth's systems, nuclear science, and how things move in the atmosphere. Her work covered many areas, from finding new energy solutions to protecting our environment. This made her a well-known expert in climate strategy.
Jane's Journey in Science
Jane Long earned her first degree in biomedical engineering from the Brown University School of Engineering. She then continued her studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received her master's and doctorate degrees.
From 1997 to 2003, Dr. Long was the Dean of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. She also directed the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy. During this time, she chaired Nevada’s special group focused on renewable energy and efficiency.
Leading Important Projects
Dr. Long has led many big projects about energy and climate policy. She helped lead studies on how California could reach its clean energy goals. She also worked on national and state groups that looked at geoengineering, which are ideas to intentionally change the Earth's climate to reduce global warming. She also advised the governor on important climate issues.
After her time at the University of Nevada, Dr. Long returned to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. There, she continued her work as a top director and research fellow. She focused on global strategies for energy and the environment.
Making a Difference for Our Planet
Dr. Jane Long recently retired from her full-time role at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. However, she continues to help the Environmental Defense Fund. She also does research at the University of California, Berkeley. Her ongoing work helps us find better ways to protect our planet and plan for a sustainable future. She is a senior fellow at the California Council on Science and Technology, continuing to share her expertise.
