Jane B. Reece, born on April 15, 1944, is an American scientist. She is also a famous author of science textbooks. She is best known for co-writing the very popular Campbell Biology textbooks. These books teach students all about biology.

She first wrote these books with another American biologist, Neil Campbell. After Mr. Campbell passed away in 2004, Jane Reece worked with Lisa Urry. Together, they updated the books for new editions. Campbell Biology is used by millions of students worldwide. It has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Early Life and Education

Jane Reece studied biology at several top universities. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), from Harvard University. This is a very famous school.

Advanced Studies in Science

She then went on to get more advanced degrees. She earned a Master of Science (M.S.) in microbiology from Rutgers University. Microbiology is the study of very tiny living things, like bacteria.

Later, she received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a field of study. Her special area was bacteriology, which focuses on bacteria. Her Ph.D. research looked at how bacteria mix their genes.

Research at Stanford

After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Reece continued her research. She worked at UC Berkeley for a while. Then, she became a researcher at Stanford University. Her main research focused on how bacteria combine their genetic material. This process is called genetic recombination.

Career in Education and Writing

Dr. Reece has taught science at different colleges. She taught at Middlesex County College in New Jersey. She also taught at Queensborough Community College in New York City.

Authoring Science Textbooks

Since 1978, Jane Reece has worked for a publishing company called Benjamin Cummings. She has been an editor there. An editor helps make sure books are clear and correct. She has written or co-written many textbooks for them.

One important book she co-authored is The World of the Cell, third edition. This book helps students understand how cells work.

Special Recognition

In 2017, Jane Reece received a special honor. Uppsala University in Sweden gave her an honorary doctorate. This means they recognized her important contributions to science and education.
