Neil Allison Campbell (born April 17, 1946 – died October 21, 2004) was an American scientist. He is most famous for his textbook called Biology. This book was first published in 1987. It has been updated many times since then.
His Biology textbook is very popular around the world. Over 700,000 students have used it. It is used in both high school and college science classes.

Education and Teaching Career
Neil Campbell studied science at several universities. He earned his Master of Science (M.S.) degree in zoology. He got this degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Later, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Plant Biology. This was from the University of California, Riverside.
Campbell was also a teacher for over 30 years. He taught at several colleges and universities. These included Cornell University, Pomona College, and the University of California, Riverside. He also taught at San Bernardino Valley College.
Awards and Recognition
Neil Campbell received special awards for his work. In 1986, he won the first-ever Outstanding Professor Award. This award was from San Bernardino Valley College. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. This was from the University of California, Riverside.
Research on Plants
Besides teaching, Campbell was also a researcher. He studied different types of plants. His research focused on plants found in deserts and along coastlines.

Neil Campbell passed away on October 21, 2004. He died from heart failure. This happened just after he finished writing the seventh international edition of his Biology textbook.
To honor his memory, an award was created at UC Riverside. It is called the Neil Allison Campbell Endowed Research Award. This award supports new research in science.
