Jane Stewart OC FRSC is a smart Canadian scientist. She studies the brain and how it affects our behavior. This field is called neuroscience. She also worked in psychology (the study of the mind) and psychiatry (mental health). Dr. Stewart was a special professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. She is now a professor emerita, which means she has retired but still has a special title.

Dr. Jane Stewart's Career

Jane Stewart loved learning about the mind and brain. She earned her first degree in psychology and biology in 1956. This was from Queen's University in Canada. She then went to the University of London in England. There, she earned her PhD in psychology in 1959. A PhD is a very high university degree. It means you are an expert in your field.

After her studies, Dr. Stewart started working. She first worked for a company called Ayerst Pharmaceuticals in Montreal. In 1962, she joined Concordia University. She became a very important person there. From 1969 to 1974, she led the Department of Psychology. This meant she was in charge of all the psychology studies. Later, from 1990 to 1997, she directed a special center. This was the Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology. It focused on how the brain affects behavior.

Dr. Stewart also helped other scientists. She served on many committees. These committees decided which research projects should get money. She also worked for 11 different scientific journals. These journals publish new scientific discoveries. She helped make sure the research was good enough to be published.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Jane Stewart has received many special awards. These awards show how important her work is. Queen's University, where she first studied, gave her an honorary degree. This is a special title given to people who have done great things.

She is also a "Fellow" of several important groups. These include the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. This means she is recognized as a top expert in psychology. She is also a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association. And she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

In 2007, Dr. Stewart received a very high honor. She was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can get in Canada. It celebrates people who have made a big difference to their country.

When she retired in 2008, a special issue of a science journal was made for her. This journal was called Biological Psychiatry. It was a way to celebrate her long and important career.
