About Jane Vieu
Jane Vieu was born Jeanne Fabre. Her mother, Marie-Élodie Fabre, was a pianist and a music teacher. Jane started writing her own music when she was just 11 years old!
She learned from some very famous music teachers. She studied how to compose music with Jules Massenet. She learned singing from Marie Caroline Miolan-Carvalho. She also studied advanced music writing, like counterpoint and fugue, with André Gedalge.
Jane Vieu became famous for her operettas. An operetta is a short, light opera that includes both singing and speaking. One of her well-known operettas was Madame Tallien, which came out in 1902. She also wrote a musical fairy tale called La belle au bois dormant (also 1902). This fairy tale was first performed at the Théâtre des Mathurins. Other popular works she created include Au bal de Flore, Les Petites entravées (1911), and Aladin, ombres chinoises (1904).
Jane Vieu wrote about 100 musical pieces in total. These included music for orchestras, chamber music (for small groups of instruments), piano music, and operas. Some of these were published under her secret name, Pierre Valette. Her music is often described as having a classic 19th-century style.
Between 1907 and 1925, Jane Vieu ran a music publishing company. She owned it with Maurice Vieu, who is thought to have been her husband. Their company in Paris was called Maurice Vieu and Jane Vieu.
She died in Paris in 1955.
