Jane Weinzapfel is an American architect and teacher. She is famous for co-founding Leers Weinzapfel Associates, an architecture firm based in Boston. This firm made history in 2007 by becoming the first woman-owned company to win the Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. In 1994, she was honored by being elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.
Jane Weinzapfel has also taught at important universities. She taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning from 1974 to 1976. Later, she taught at the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Planning in 1996 and 1999. She was also a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome.
Early Life and Education
Jane Hanson Weinzapfel was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She grew up in Tucson, Arizona. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Arizona.
After college, Jane worked as an apprentice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She worked with Earl Flansburgh and later with Wallace Floyd Ellenzweig Moore, Inc. There, she helped with big projects like the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona. She also worked on the Alewife Multimodal MBTA Station in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1982, she and Andrea Leers started their own company, Leers Weinzapfel Associates, in Boston.
