Janeese Lewis George, born on April 30, 1988, is a lawyer and politician from Washington, D.C.. She works to help the people of her city. Early Life and Education
Janeese Lewis George grew up in Washington, D.C. Her father worked for the postal service. She went to the School Without Walls in the Foggy Bottom area.
After high school, Janeese went to St. John's University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. She studied politics and government. Later, she went to Howard University School of Law to become a lawyer. She worked as a waitress to help pay for her law school studies.
Janeese Lewis George's Career
After finishing law school, Janeese Lewis George worked as a prosecutor in Philadelphia. A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government. They try to prove that someone has broken the law.
In 2014, Janeese returned to Washington, D.C. She came back to help care for her father. She then worked for the Attorney General of the District of Columbia, Karl Racine. The Attorney General is the main legal officer for the city. While working there, Janeese was part of a group called the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1403. This group helps government workers.
As a prosecutor for young people in D.C., she used her own experiences. She had seen friends affected by violence when she was growing up. This helped her understand and guide her colleagues. Before running for the Council, Janeese also worked for the District of Columbia State Board of Education. This board helps make decisions about schools in the city.
Her 2020 Campaign for Council
In 2019, Janeese Lewis George decided to run for the Council of the District of Columbia. During her campaign, some groups tried to spread negative messages about her. One group, called Democrats for Education Reform, claimed she would "defund the police." This means they said she would take money away from the police department.
However, many groups that support progressive ideas backed her. These included Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party, and the Democratic Socialists of America.
Janeese was the first candidate to get the most matching funds. This was through a public program in D.C. The program helps candidates by matching small donations. It limits donations to $50 per supporter. By March 2020, she had almost 1,200 supporters. On June 2, she won against the person who was already in office, Brandon Todd. She won by a good amount of votes. She was officially elected to the Council in November 2020.
