Janet Beery facts for kids
Janet Lynn Beery is an American mathematician and a historian who studies the history of mathematics. She teaches math and computer science at the University of Redlands. She also used to be the main editor for a math history magazine called Convergence. Janet Beery has even written a book about the math ideas of a famous old mathematician named Thomas Harriot.
Janet Beery's Journey in Math
Janet Beery started her college journey at the University of Puget Sound. She graduated in 1983 with degrees in both mathematics and English literature.
After that, she went to Dartmouth College for more advanced studies in math. She earned her master's degree there in 1985. Then, in 1989, she completed her Ph.D., which is the highest degree you can get in a subject. Her Ph.D. research was about a part of math called group theory.
While she was studying at Dartmouth, she also taught at the University of Puget Sound. Since 1989, she has been a professor at the University of Redlands.
What Janet Beery Has Done
Janet Beery has worked on many interesting projects.
She helped edit a book called Thomas Harriot’s Doctrine of Triangular Numbers: the 'Magisteria Magna'. This book is about Thomas Harriot's ideas on triangular numbers.
She also helped edit another important book. It's called Women in Mathematics – Celebrating the Centennial of the Mathematical Association of America. This book celebrates women who have made big contributions to math.
From 2009 to 2019, Janet Beery was the main editor for Convergence. This is a special magazine from the Mathematical Association of America that focuses on the history of mathematics.
She has also worked with the College Board. This group creates important tests for students, like the AP Calculus exam. Janet Beery helped create questions and learning materials for these exams.
Since 2014, she has also been a leader for the Association for Women in Mathematics. This group supports women in math.
Awards and Honors
In 2010, the Mathematical Association of America gave Janet Beery a special award. It was called the Meritorious Service Award. This award recognized her excellent service and contributions to the field of mathematics.
