Janet Gaylord Moore (born 1906, died 1992) was an American writer, art expert, and artist. She wrote books that helped people understand art. One of her famous books, The Many Ways of Seeing: An Introduction to the Pleasures of Art, won a special award called the Newbery Honor in 1970. Another book, The Eastern Gate: An Introduction to the Arts of China and Japan, also helped her win the Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature in 1980.

Janet Moore's Life Story

Janet was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1906. She went to Vassar College and earned her first degree. Later, she studied fine arts at Columbia University. Janet loved art so much that she traveled to France, Italy, and China to learn about painting. When she came back to the United States, she continued her art studies with a famous artist named George Grosz in New York City.

Teaching and Museum Work

Janet started her career teaching at Miss Hewitt's School in New York City. Later, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she spent most of her working life. From 1947 to 1961, she taught at the Laurel School for Girls.

After teaching, Janet began working at the Cleveland Museum of Art. She became a very important person there, rising to the position of curator. This meant she was in charge of the art history and education department. In 1967, she also started teaching as a professor at Case Western Reserve University.

Retirement Years

In 1975, Janet retired from her busy career. She moved to a cozy cottage on the coast of Maine. She lived there until she passed away in 1992. Janet Gaylord Moore was buried in Hillside Cemetery, located in Wilton, Connecticut.

Awards and Recognitions

Janet Gaylord Moore received several honors for her work in art and literature:

  • First prize at the Cleveland Museum of Art show in May 1948.
  • Newbery Honor in 1970 for her book The Many Ways of Seeing: An Introduction to the Pleasures of Art. This is a very respected award for children's literature.
