Janet Lilly, born on August 15, 1957, is an American modern dancer and choreographer. She is well-known for her work with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. She was a main dancer there from 1983 to 1991.
Today, Janet Lilly is the Director of the School of Dance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also served as the president of a national yoga association for two years.

Early Life and School
Janet Lilly grew up in Iowa City, Iowa. She finished high school there in 1975.
Dance Career
Lilly studied dance at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in dance in 1982.
From 1983 to 1991, she was a principal dancer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. She also helped the company as a master teacher and choreographic assistant.
After that, she went to the University of Michigan for her graduate degree. She graduated with high honors in 1992.
Teaching and Leadership
Lilly taught dance for fifteen years at the Peck School of the Arts in Milwaukee. This school is part of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She was also the Chair of the Dance Department from 2005 to 2009.
In 2011, she joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She became the Chair of the Dance Department, taking over from Jan Van Dyke.
In 2016, the Dance Department became the School of Dance. This happened when the UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts was created. Lilly now serves as the Director of the School of Dance. She also works with the National Association of Schools of Dance.
Awards and Recognition
Janet Lilly has received several important awards for her work.
- In 2008–2009, she received a Fulbright Lecturer Award.
- In 2001, she earned a Creation and Planning Grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.
Yoga Practice
Janet Lilly started studying Iyengar Yoga in 1992. She learned from Laurie Blakeney while in graduate school. She has been teaching yoga since 1995.
She has traveled to Pune, India, seven times to study at the Iyengar Institute. There, she learned directly from B. K. S. Iyengar. She also had a four-month stay at the University of Pune.
From 2012 to 2014, she was the president of the Iyengar National United States Association. Today, she teaches yoga at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also teaches at Triad Yoga in Greensboro.
