Janet McAdams facts for kids
Janet McAdams (born in 1957) is an American poet. She is well-known for her book of poems called The Island of Lost Luggage. This book won two important awards: the American Book Award in 2001 and the First Book Award for Poetry in 1999. She also helps publish books by other Native American poets. Before becoming a writer, she had many interesting jobs, like a camp counselor, a mapmaker, and even a cook!
Her Early Life and Studies
Janet McAdams has family roots from the Alabama Creek tribe, Scotland, and Ireland. She went to college to study writing. She earned a special degree from the University of Alabama. Later, she got her PhD from Emory University. There, she focused on studying poetry by American Indian writers.
She has taught writing and literature at several universities. These include the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma. Today, she is a Professor of Poetry at Kenyon College.
