Early Life and Education
Janet was born in Toronto, Ontario. She lived there for 26 years. In 1979, she moved to St. John's.
Janet started writing when she was young. She was only fifteen when she began her first book. It was a historical novel for young readers. She did not finish this book. However, writing helped her discover her passion. She loved learning about how people lived in the past.
She studied folklore at university. Folklore is the study of traditional stories, customs, and beliefs. She earned a Ph.D. in Folklore. This means she became an expert in the subject.
Inspiration for Her Books
Janet McNaughton's novel An Earthly Knight was inspired by old songs. These songs are called ballads. The two ballads that inspired her were Tam Lin and Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight.
