Janet Mullarney (born March 15, 1952 – died April 3, 2020) was a talented Irish artist and sculptor. She was known for creating unique artworks using many different materials.
Life and Education
Janet Mullarney was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1952. She grew up in Rathfarnham. She spent much of her life living in both Ireland and Italy. Her final home was in Florence. Janet was one of eleven children. Her mother, Máire Mullarney, helped start the Green Party in Ireland.
Janet first studied psychiatric nursing. Later, she decided to follow her passion for art. She went to study art in Florence, Italy. She attended the Accademia di Belle Arti and the Scuola Professionale di Intaglio. Janet Mullarney passed away in 2020 after a long illness.
Career and Artworks
Janet Mullarney was a very imaginative artist. An art critic named Aidan Dunne once described her art as a world of fables and fairy tales. He noted that her animal characters often represented humans. Her artworks also made people think of exciting circus performers.
Janet used many different materials in her sculptures. These included bronze, wood, plaster, foam, cloth, glass, and wax. Her art often explored religious ideas, art history, and human relationships. Her works are held in important collections. These include the Arts Council of Ireland and the IMMA.
Mullarney was a member of Aosdána, a special group for Irish artists. She was chosen to join in 1999. Her art is also shown by Taylor Galleries.
