The Story of Taylor Galleries
Taylor Galleries first opened its doors in July 1978. It was started by John Taylor. Before this, John worked at another gallery called the Dawson Gallery, which began in 1944.
When the Dawson Gallery closed in 1978, John decided to open his own gallery. He named it Taylor Galleries. It first opened at 6 Dawson Street in Dublin.
In 1990, the gallery moved to a smaller spot at 34 Kildare Street. An architect named Ross Cahill O'Brien helped design the new space. Then, in 1996, it moved again to its current home at 16 Kildare Street. Today, John Taylor and his brother Patrick Taylor manage the gallery together.
What You Can See at Taylor Galleries
Taylor Galleries shows and sells many types of art. You can find paintings, sculptures, and prints. Most of the artists are Irish. The gallery often has special shows focusing on one artist. They also have two big group shows each year, one in summer and one in winter. These shows sometimes feature new artists too.
The gallery is inside a beautiful old Georgian house. This house was built in 1759. It still has many of its original features, like a grand central staircase. The art is displayed on two floors.
Taylor Galleries also looks after the art collections of several artists who are no longer alive. These include famous names like Louis le Brocquy and Patrick Scott.
Discovering New Artists
In 2013, the gallery started a special project called LACUNA. This project helps show the work of new artists. These are artists who might not have a gallery in Dublin yet. Sabina Mac Mahon and artist David Quinn help choose the art for these shows. LACUNA shows art that is new and exciting. It runs alongside the gallery's main art program.
