Janice Green Douglas, born in 1943, is an American doctor. She made history as the first woman professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Douglas is also a respected member of the American Heart Association. She is well-known for her important research on how our bodies control blood pressure and a condition called hypertension (high blood pressure).

Early Life and Education

Janice Green was born in 1943. Her parents were also doctors. While they finished their medical degrees, her grandmother raised her. Janice attended Fisk University for her first college degree. In 1968, she earned her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. This was the same medical school her parents attended.

Dr. Douglas continued her medical training at Meharry for two years. After that, she moved to Vanderbilt University. There, she received a special grant from the National Institutes of Health. This grant supported her two-year fellowship in endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of hormones and glands in the body. During this time, her research focused on understanding high blood pressure in different groups of people.

Her Medical Career and Research

Dr. Douglas began her professional career in 1973. She worked at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She stayed there until 1976. That year, she moved to Case Western Reserve University.

In 1984, Dr. Douglas achieved a major milestone. She was promoted to a full professor at the university. This was a very special achievement because she was the first woman at Case Western to become a full professor. She retired from her work in 2005.
