About Janne Wirman
Janne Wirman was born in Espoo, Finland. He started playing the piano when he was just five years old. For most of his younger years, he focused on playing jazz music. However, his main interest changed to heavy metal music when he joined the band Children of Bodom in 1997.
Janne finished his studies at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory when he was sixteen. Soon after, he was asked to join Children of Bodom by Jaska Raatikainen. The band needed a new keyboard player because their previous one had left. Janne joining the band was a very important moment for them. He brought his amazing talent to the group. After just one practice, he could play perfectly with the band's lead singer and guitarist, Alexi Laiho. You can hear how well they played together on songs like Bed of Razors, Lake Bodom, and Downfall.
Janne's main inspiration is another keyboard player named Jens Johansson. Jens played with bands like Stratovarius and Dio. Janne learned a special way of playing his keyboard tilted forward from Jens.
In the year 2000, Janne started his own band called Warmen. This band was a side-project for him. His brother, Antti Wirman, also played in Warmen. Their second album was called Beyond Abilities.
Around the same time, another heavy metal band called Masterplan asked Jens Johansson to play on their first album. But Jens was busy, so he suggested Janne instead. So, in early 2002, Janne helped record Masterplan's first album. Masterplan then offered Janne a permanent spot in their band. However, Janne decided to stay with Children of Bodom. Masterplan released their album and thanked Janne for his work in the CD booklet.
To record music for Warmen, Janne built his own studio. It was first called Warmen Productions Studio but is now known as Beyond Abilities. This studio has also been used to record keyboard parts for Kotipelto's albums. Parts of Ensiferum's Iron album and Sinergy's fourth album were also recorded there.
Janne has had some difficult experiences with companies that offer sponsorships. He worked with Roland Scandinavia and Korg in the past. They promised him new equipment, but he never received anything. Because of this, on the back of Warmen's second album, it says: "No Roland or Korg products were used."
Janne was only supposed to play a few shows with Children of Bodom at first. But the band really liked him. Alexi Laiho once said that he knew Janne was "the man" after seeing him for the first time in a relaxed setting. Janne stayed with the band. He said he felt like a true member of the band when they were recording his second album with them.
Musical Gear
For most of his career, Janne Wirman used a Korg X5D keyboard when playing live. He used it to control other sound equipment. The main sound he uses for his keyboard solos was created by Jens Johansson. It's a special sound that makes the Korg Polysix keyboard sound like a Roland JV-1080.
