Janos Trail facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Janos Trail was an important path used long ago to move goods and materials. It stretched from the mountains of southern New Mexico all the way to a town called Janos in Chihuahua, Mexico. This trail was mostly used to carry copper ore from a place called Santa Rita del Cobre to factories in Chihuahua where the copper was processed.

A Path Through History

The route of the Janos Trail was not new. It actually followed an ancient Native American trade route. These paths had been used for many years by different groups of people.

When Was the Trail Established?

The Janos Trail was officially set up around 1803. This happened after the Spanish discovered a lot of copper. They found this valuable metal in the Pinos Altos Mountains. These mountains are part of the Black Range near Santa Rita. The trail then became key for moving the newly mined copper.
