Janusz Olejniczak (born October 2, 1952 – died October 20, 2024) was a famous Polish classical pianist and actor. He was known for his amazing piano skills and for playing music in movies.

Life and Music Career

Janusz Olejniczak started playing the piano when he was just six years old. He learned from many great teachers in Poland, including Luiza Walewska, Ryszard Bakst, and Zbigniew Drzewiecki. He studied in cities like Warsaw and Łódź.

In 1970, when he was 18, he took part in the VIII International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. This is a very important competition for piano players. He finished in sixth place. Two years later, he won fourth place in the Alfredo Casella Piano Competition in Naples, Italy.

From 1971 to 1973, Janusz studied in Paris, France. His teachers there were Constantine Schmaeling and Witold Małcużyński. After that, he came back to Poland to study at the Higher State School of Music in Warsaw. His teacher was Barbara Hesse-Bukowska. He continued his studies in Germany from 1977 to 1978.

Playing and Recording Music

Janusz Olejniczak was part of a chamber orchestra. This is a small group of musicians who play classical music together. He played many different types of music. His favorite composers included Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, Ravel, and Prokofiev.

He recorded a lot of music for radio and television. He also released many CDs with different music companies. He won several important awards called Fryderyks. These are like major music awards in Poland. He also won many awards for his recordings of Chopin's piano concertos with the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra.

Teaching and Judging

Janusz Olejniczak also shared his knowledge with others. He taught classes for four years at the Academy of Music in Kraków. He also held special master classes in Poland, Canada, the United States, and Japan. These classes help young piano players improve their skills. He was also a judge at international piano competitions. This means he helped decide who the best young pianists were.

Acting Career

Besides being a famous pianist, Janusz Olejniczak was also an actor. He played the role of the famous composer Frédéric Chopin in the movie The Blue Note.

He also played music in the well-known film The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski. In this movie, he also appeared as the "hand double" for the actor Adrien Brody. This means that when you see close-ups of the piano playing in the movie, it's actually Janusz Olejniczak's hands you are seeing!

Death

Janusz Olejniczak passed away on October 20, 2024, at the age of 72. He died from a heart attack.
