The Jar with a Twist (also called Jar-with-a-Twist) is a special peanut butter jar. It has a bottom that you can twist, just like a deodorant stick. This twisting action pushes the peanut butter up to the top of the jar. This way, it's much easier to reach all the peanut butter, especially when the jar is almost empty!

How the Jar with a Twist Was Invented

The idea for the Jar with a Twist came from four friends: Michael Bissette, Stephen Smith, Spencer Vaughn, and Sean Echevarria. They were students at North Carolina State University. They created the jar as part of a big project for their senior year.

At first, they wanted to make a special knife that wouldn't get messy. But soon, they realized a bigger problem: it's really hard to get the last bits of peanut butter out of a nearly empty jar! So, they decided to solve that problem instead.

To test their idea, they first used simple PVC pipes and a homemade plug. Then, they used the university's 3D printers to make a better working model of their jar.

The Jar's Design and Features

In June 2013, the team filed a patent for their invention. A patent is like a special legal document that protects their unique idea. This means no one else can copy their design without permission.

The university newspaper, Technician, described the finished jar. It said the Jar with a Twist would have a special seal on both the top and bottom. This seal makes sure no peanut butter is left behind when you twist the bottom. The inside parts of the jar fit together very tightly. This creates an airtight and watertight seal, much like the parts inside a car engine.

The jars are made using a process called injection molding. This is where melted plastic is pushed into a mold to create the jar's shape. The plastic used is called PET plastic, which is a common type of plastic used for many food containers. The company says that food stored in these jars will stay fresh for the same amount of time as in regular jars, usually 3 to 6 months after opening.

The team plans to first sell the jar for peanut butter. After that, they hope to use their design for other foods like jelly, salsa, and mayonnaise. Making each jar costs about $0.13. This is only three cents more than a regular peanut butter jar. One cent from each jar's cost helps pay for the Jar with a Twist company's special license.
