Jarlinson Pantano's Cycling Journey
Jarlinson Pantano started his professional cycling career in 2012. He quickly became known as a talented climber. Climbers are cyclists who are very good at riding up steep hills and mountains.
In 2014, he competed in the 2014 Giro d'Italia, which is one of the biggest cycling races in the world. The next year, in 2015, he joined the IAM Cycling team. He then raced in the 2015 Tour de France, another very famous race, where he finished in 19th place overall.
Winning a Tour de France Stage
A big moment in Pantano's career happened in 2016. He won Stage 15 of the 2016 Tour de France. This was a tough mountain stage that went over the Col du Grand Colombier. Winning a stage in the Tour de France is a huge achievement for any cyclist.
After his success, he was chosen to represent Colombia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He competed in the individual road race. In 2016, he signed a contract with the Trek-Segafredo team. He stayed with them until 2019.
Rule Violation and Return to Cycling
In April 2019, Jarlinson Pantano was suspended from his team. This happened because he had a positive test for a banned substance during a doping control. Doping controls are tests done to make sure athletes are competing fairly.
Because of this, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is the main group for cycling, temporarily stopped him from racing. In June 2019, he announced that he was retiring from professional cycling.
In May 2020, the UCI gave Pantano a four-year ban from competing. This ban meant he could not race until April 2023. After his ban ended, Pantano returned to cycling. He now races at an amateur level with a Colombian team called EPM.
