Jasmila Žbanić (born December 19, 1974) is a famous film director, screenwriter, and producer from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has won many important awards for her movies. These include the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. She has also been nominated for the Academy Award and two BAFTA Awards.
Her most famous film is Quo Vadis, Aida?, a war drama from 2020. This movie earned her nominations for top awards like the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It also got her nominations for the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Director.

Early Life and First Steps
Jasmila Žbanić was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on December 19, 1974. She went to local schools and then studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. After her studies, she worked in the United States. She was a puppeteer in a theater group called Bread and Puppet Theater. She also worked as a clown.
In 1997, she started her own group called "Deblokada." This name means "de-blocking." Through Deblokada, she began making documentaries and short films.
Making Movies and Winning Awards
After returning to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jasmila Žbanić continued her work with "Deblokada." She wrote and produced many short films and documentaries. Her work has been shown all over the world at film festivals and art shows.
Her 2006 movie, Grbavica, won the top prize, the Golden Bear, at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival. It also won awards for Best European Film and Best European Actress in 2006.
In 2010, her film Na putu (meaning On the Path) was shown at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. This movie tells the story of a young couple living in Sarajevo.
Quo Vadis, Aida? Success
Žbanić's 2020 war drama film Quo Vadis, Aida? received many awards and nominations. It won the Audience Award at the 2021 International Film Festival Rotterdam. It also won the Best International Film Award at the 2021 Gothenburg Film Festival.
In March 2021, the film was nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language. Jasmila Žbanić herself was nominated for Best Director at the 74th British Academy Film Awards.
On March 15, 2021, Quo Vadis, Aida? was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. At the 34th European Film Awards in December 2021, the film won the Award for Best Film. Žbanić also won the Award for Best Director.
