Jasmila Žbanić (born December 19, 1974) is a talented film director, writer, and producer from Bosnia. She has won many important awards for her movies. These include the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. She has also been nominated for the famous Academy Award and two BAFTA Awards.
She is well-known for writing and directing the 2020 film Quo Vadis, Aida?. This movie is a drama about war. It earned her nominations for the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. She was also nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Director at the BAFTA Awards.

Early Life and Beginnings
Jasmila Žbanić was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on December 19, 1974. She went to local schools and then studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. There, she earned her degree.
For a while, she worked in the United States. She was a puppeteer for the Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont. She also worked as a clown in a workshop. In 1997, she started her own group called "Deblokada." This is where she began making documentaries and short films.
Filmmaking Career
After returning to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jasmila Žbanić founded her artists' group, "Deblokada." The name "Deblokada" means "de-blocking." Through this group, Žbanić wrote and produced many documentaries. She also made video art and short films.
Her work has been shown all over the world. Her films have been screened at many film festivals. They have also been part of art exhibitions.
Award-Winning Films
Her 2006 feature film, Grbavica, won the top prize, the Golden Bear, at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival. It also won other awards, including Best European Film.
Her 2010 film, Na putu (On the Path), was shown at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. This movie tells the story of a young couple living in Sarajevo.
Žbanić's 2020 war drama film, Quo Vadis, Aida?, received many honors. It won the Audience Award at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam. It also won Best International Film at the 2021 Gothenburg Film Festival. The movie was shown at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. It also won the Best International Film Award at the 36th Independent Spirit Awards.
In March 2021, Quo Vadis, Aida? was nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language. Jasmila Žbanić herself was nominated for Best Director at the 74th British Academy Film Awards. On March 15, 2021, her film was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.
At the 34th European Film Awards in December 2021, Quo Vadis, Aida? won the Award for Best Film. Jasmila Žbanić also won the Award for Best Director. The actress in the film, Jasna Đuričić, won the Award for Best Actress.
