Political Journey
Starting in the Arizona House
Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren was chosen for Arizona's 7th legislative district. This happened after Arlando Teller, a Democrat, left his job. He took a new position with the United States government. Blackwater-Nygren did not run for election in 2022.
Becoming Apache County Attorney
In December 2024, Blackwater-Nygren was appointed as the Apache County Attorney. The Board of Supervisors chose her for this role. Her predecessor had been suspended from the job.
She was chosen over two other people. Some people wondered if there would be problems because she is also the First Lady of the Navajo Nation. She lives in Red Mesa, which is not in the county seat.
Blackwater-Nygren promised to avoid any conflicts of interest. This means she would not work on cases where her two roles might cause a problem. She also said she spends a lot of time in Window Rock. This area is close to the county seat. Her main goals for the job are to make communities safer. She also wants to hire more staff and improve how the office works.
