Early Life and Learning

Jasmyn Lawson grew up in Jackson, Michigan. She went to Spelman College for her bachelor's degree. There, she studied drama and also learned about film. While in college, she had an internship at Cartoon Network. Jasmyn also wrote a blog often. When she was 21, she wrote a post saying she wanted to work at Netflix.

Her Career Journey

Jasmyn Lawson's first job after college was as a page at NBC. After this program ended, she worked at Glow. This was a company that helped businesses with social media marketing.

Working at Giphy

In 2016, Jasmyn left Glow to work at Giphy. She became a culture editor there. Her job was to create GIFs that were important to Black culture. She used Twitter to find out which GIFs people wanted. Jasmyn believes that having a strong presence on Twitter is key to her work. She says that Black Twitter helps start many cultural trends.

Joining Netflix

Netflix found Jasmyn Lawson in 2018. They wanted her to join their new Strong Black Lead project. She was hired as the editorial and brand manager for this project. She managed all the social media messages. Jasmyn also produced podcasts called Strong Black Legends and Strong Black Laughs.

She noticed that people on Twitter wanted to watch old Black sitcoms. These were TV shows from the late 1990s and early 2000s. This made her suggest that Netflix get the rights to stream shows like Sister, Sister and Moesha. These shows became very popular when they came to Netflix.

Becoming a Manager

In November 2020, Jasmyn Lawson was promoted. She became a manager of original series at Netflix. In this role, she oversees shows like Never Have I Ever and Dear White People. She also helps create new comedy shows for Netflix.
