Jasper's Story
The first European settler to arrive in the Jasper area was Andrew Millet in 1824. A post office was opened in Jasper on June 18, 1874, with Henry Ferguson as its first postmaster. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway also had a train station in Jasper. This station was first called Fairfield.
Before 1908, Jasper was one of the larger populated areas in Lenawee County, with about 8,000 residents. However, a serious health crisis caused the population to drop significantly. More than half of the residents were affected, and many homes in the southern part of town were burned to help stop the spread of the illness.
The community of Jasper was officially recognized as a census-designated place for the first time during the 2010 census. This means it now has officially defined borders and its population is counted separately.
