About Javid Bowen
Javid Bowen was born in Cairns, Queensland, a city in Australia. He has a special background, being from both Indigenous Australian and Māori families. His uncles, Matt Bowen and Brenton Bowen, were also famous rugby league players! Javid grew up in a small Aboriginal community called Hopevale in Cape York. He started playing junior rugby league there while attending Abergworie College.
Javid's Rugby Journey
Starting Out in Rugby League
After finishing school, Javid joined the Sydney Roosters, another big rugby league club. In 2011, he played for their junior team. In 2012, Javid moved back to Queensland and joined the North Queensland Cowboys. He played for their Under-20s team, scoring 23 tries in 30 games between 2012 and 2013. His great performance earned him a three-year contract with the Cowboys until 2016.
In February 2014, Javid was part of the North Queensland team that won the 2014 NRL Auckland Nines tournament, scoring two tries. This was a fun, fast-paced version of rugby league.
Later in 2014, Javid played for the Northern Pride, a team linked with the Cowboys in the Queensland Cup. In July, he played for the Queensland Residents side, scoring a try in their win over New South Wales. In September, he helped the Northern Pride win their Grand Final. A week later, Javid scored three tries and was named Man of the Match in the first-ever 2014 NRL State Championship game, where the Pride beat the Penrith Panthers. He had a fantastic first season with the Pride, scoring 12 tries in 23 games.
In 2015, Javid continued to play for the Northern Pride. He was also selected for the Queensland Residents team again, scoring another try in their win over New South Wales.
Making His NRL Debut
In 2016, Javid made his big debut in the NRL for the North Queensland Cowboys. In his very first game, he scored a try! He played 10 games that season, scoring 4 tries. He even started in two of the Cowboys' important finals games.
In 2017, Javid played 13 games and scored three tries. He often filled in for injured players, playing as a winger or centre for the Cowboys and also for the Northern Pride.
Challenges and Comebacks
The 2018 season started with Javid playing at centre for the Cowboys due to an injury to another player. However, after five games, he was sent back to play for the Northern Pride. He only played one more game for the Cowboys that year. Despite this, he re-signed with the Cowboys for another year.
In 2019, Javid played seven games for the Cowboys, mostly on the wing, scoring two tries. He spent most of this season playing for the Northern Pride. In September 2019, it was announced that he would not be re-signed by the Cowboys.
In 2020, Javid joined the Northern Pride full-time and became their captain. He only played one game that year because the season was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Final Season and Retirement
In February 2021, Javid re-joined the North Queensland Cowboys after training with them, signing a one-year deal. In May, he signed on with the Cowboys until the end of the 2022 season. However, in July, Javid suffered a serious knee injury during a game, tearing his ACL and MCL.
On October 26, 2021, Javid announced his retirement from rugby league because of his knee injury.
