Jay Edwards grew up in Muncie, Indiana. He became a basketball star early on. He went to Marion High School in Marion, Indiana.

At Marion High School, Jay Edwards and his teammate, Lyndon Jones, were a powerful duo. They led their team, the Marion Giants, to win three state championships in a row. This amazing achievement was known as the "Purple Reign." This name came from the school's colors, which are purple and gold.

Mr. Basketball Award

In 1987, Jay Edwards received a special honor. He shared the title of Indiana's "Mr. Basketball" award with Lyndon Jones. This award goes to the best high school basketball player in Indiana.

During his second year at Indiana, in 1989, Jay was a key player. He averaged 20.0 points per game. He also held the school record for making a three-pointer in 20 consecutive games. His strong performance helped the Hoosiers win the Big Ten title in 1989. That same year, he was recognized as an All-American.
