Early Life and GUM's Beginning
Jay Wesley Watson was born in Carnarvon, Australia. He grew up in a town called Northam. When he was young, people gave him the nickname Gumby. This name came from a famous clay animation TV show.
Later, when Jay started making his own music, he shortened his nickname to GUM. This became the name for his solo music projects.
Solo Albums as GUM
Jay released his first solo album as GUM, called Delorean Highway, in 2014. He had recorded most of the songs back in 2011. He said it felt good when it finally came out, even though the songs felt old to him. The album was described as a collection of "paranoid pop songs." These songs were mostly about falling in love and things he worried about.
In 2015, Jay released his second album, Glamorous Damage. He recorded this album in London. A song from the album, "Anaesthetized Lesson," was later remixed by Kevin Parker from Tame Impala. When Jay performs live as GUM, he often uses backing tracks to help with the music.
His third album, Flash in the Pan, came out in 2016. Before the album, he released a single called "Gemini." This song was described as a mix of looped vocals, synth sounds like Pond's music, and dreamy bass. Jay said "Gemini" was the first song he recorded for the album. He also mentioned it was probably the most direct song.
Jay Watson lives in Beaconsfield, which is a suburb near Fremantle in Perth. In 2019, he and his girlfriend Lucy welcomed their son, Jack.
