Jaylon Tate (born January 16, 1995) is an American professional basketball player. He plays as a Point guard for Szedeák in Hungary's top basketball league, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I/A. Tate also played college basketball for the University of Illinois.
High School Basketball Days
Jaylon Tate started his high school basketball journey at De La Salle Institute. After two years, he moved to Simeon Career Academy. At Simeon, he joined forces with talented teammates like Jabari Parker and Kendrick Nunn. Together, they helped Simeon win two state championships in a row in 2012 and 2013. These were big wins for their school in the Illinois High School Association championships.
In October 2012, Jaylon decided to play for the University of Illinois after visiting their campus. He also played on the AAU circuit with a team called Meanstreets.
College Basketball Career
At the University of Illinois, Jaylon Tate showed his skills on the court. In his second year, he led his team in assists, which means he helped his teammates score a lot. In his final year, he was best at his "assist to turnover ratio," meaning he made good passes and rarely lost the ball.
During his junior year, Jaylon had surgery on a dislocated finger. Even with this, he was named to the All-Academic Big Ten team in both his junior and senior years. This award recognizes student-athletes who do well in both sports and school.
Professional Basketball Journey
In October 2017, Jaylon Tate began his professional career. He signed with the Niagara River Lions in Canada's National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). After his first season, he was named the Rookie of the Year in 2018. He led the league by averaging 7.53 assists per game and also scored 13.1 points per game. He was also chosen for the Third Team All-NBLC, which means he was one of the best players in the league.
In July 2018, Tate moved to Finland and signed with Pyrintö for the 2018–19 season. He later played for the London Lightning in Canada during the 2019–20 season.
In October 2021, Jaylon joined the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA G League, a league connected to the NBA. He later played briefly for the South Bay Lakers in the same league.
In January 2022, he returned to the London Lightning. More recently, on December 6, 2024, Jaylon Tate signed with Szedeák in Hungary, where he continues his professional basketball career.
