Jean-Joseph Sue 1710-1792
Jean-Joseph Sue, a famous surgeon and anatomist.

Jean-Joseph Sue (born April 20, 1710 – died December 15, 1792) was a famous French surgeon and anatomist. An anatomist is a scientist who studies the structure of living things, like the human body.

A Life of Discovery

Jean-Joseph Sue was born in a town called La Colle-sur-Loup on April 20, 1710.

He became a professor at important schools in France. These included the Collège Royal de Chirurgie (Royal College of Surgery) and the Académie de peinture et de sculpture (Academy of Painting and Sculpture).

Professor Sue wrote many books about anatomy and surgery. He also created about 200 detailed drawings of the human body. These drawings helped students learn about how the body works.

In 1750, he published a book called "Anthropotomie ou l'Art de disséquer". This book taught people the art of dissection, which is carefully taking apart bodies to study them. It is still seen as a very important book today.

Another important book by Sue was "Traité d'Ostéologie". This was his translation of a book by Alexander Munro about the anatomy of bones. Sue's translation was known for its beautiful and very detailed pictures.

Because of his important work, he became a special member of several famous scientific groups. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1760. He also became a founding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. In 1779, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society.

His eldest son, Pierre Sue FRSE (1739-1816), was also an anatomist.
