About Jean Carn's Life

Jean Carn was born in Columbus, Georgia. She started singing in her church choir when she was only four years old.

Early Music Journey

Jean Carn planned to study music at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. However, she met and married jazz pianist Doug Carn. She then became a main singer in his jazz fusion band. They lived in Los Angeles, California. Jean sang on three of Doug's early albums: Infant Eyes, Spirit of the New Land, and Revelation. The couple later divorced.

Joining Philadelphia International Records

In 1976, Jean Carn signed with Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records. This was a very famous record label. She released her first album, Jean Carn, that same year. .....

Her third album with Philadelphia International was When I Find You Love in 1979. The song "My Love Don't Come Easy" also did well on the R&B charts. Another song from this album, "Was That All It Was?", became a big disco hit in clubs in the UK.

New Record Labels

After her time at Philadelphia International, Jean Carn moved to the TSOP label for her 1981 album, Sweet and Wonderful.

In 1982, she joined Motown Records, another very famous music label. Her only album with Motown was Trust Me. A song from this album, "If You Don't Know Me By Now," was a cover of a hit song by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The famous group The Temptations sang backup on it.

By 1986, Jean Carn signed with Omni Records. Her album Closer Than Close, produced by saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., became a number one hit on the R&B charts. Her 1988 album, You're a Part of Me, was her only release with Atlantic Records.
