Jean Fernandez (born 8 October 1954) is a French football expert. He has been both a professional player and a manager. He was born in Mostaganem, which was then part of French Algeria.
Jean Fernandez is well-known for coaching many football teams. These include famous clubs like Metz and Marseille. A famous French player, Franck Ribéry, even saw him as a mentor.

Playing Career
Jean Fernandez started his football journey as a Midfielder. He played for several teams during his career.
- From 1972 to 1975, he played for Béziers.
- He then moved to Marseille, where he played from 1975 to 1980.
- After Marseille, he joined Bordeaux from 1980 to 1982.
- His last club as a player was Cannes, where he played from 1982 to 1984.
During his playing days, Jean Fernandez also represented France. He competed for his country at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Managerial Career
After his playing career, Jean Fernandez became a football manager. He has managed many clubs across different countries.
Early Coaching Days
Fernandez began his coaching career at Cannes in 1985. He stayed there for five years. He also had short spells at Nice and Marseille in the early 1990s.
Coaching Abroad
Jean Fernandez also coached teams in other countries. He managed Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia multiple times. He also coached Al-Shabab and Al-Wahda in Saudi Arabia. Later, he managed Étoile du Sahel in Tunisia.
Return to France
Back in France, he managed Sochaux from 1999 to 2002. Then he coached Metz from 2002 to 2005. He returned to Marseille as manager for the 2005–2006 season.
Success at Auxerre
One of his most successful periods was managing Auxerre. He led the team for five years, from 2006 to 2011. In the 2009–10 season, he guided Auxerre into the UEFA Champions League, which is a big achievement. Because of this success, he was named France's manager of the year for that season.
Later Coaching Roles
After Auxerre, he managed Nancy from 2011 until early 2013. He then became the manager of Montpellier in July 2013. However, he left Montpellier in December of the same year after a difficult period. He later coached Al-Khor and Al-Gharafa in Qatar.
