Jean François de Bette was born in Brussels. His father was Ambroise de Bette, the 2nd Marquess of Lede. His grandfather was Guillaume de Bette, the 1st Marquess. Jean François spent most of his life working for the Spanish Crown. He was a top commander in areas like Aragon and Majorca. In 1703, he became a Knight of the Golden Fleece. This was a very important award.

Jean François de Bette is most famous for his role in the War of the Quadruple Alliance. This war happened between 1718 and 1719. Spain wanted to get back control of Sardinia, Sicily, and Naples. These lands had been Spanish for a long time. But after the Treaty of Utrecht and Rastatt, they were lost.
The Quadruple Alliance was formed against Spain's wishes. It included Austria, Great Britain, France, and Savoy. Jean François de Bette led the Spanish troops. They tried to take back Sardinia and Sicily from the Austrians.

From 1720 to 1721, Jean François de Bette led another successful mission. He helped to end the Siege of Ceuta. This city was being attacked by Sultan Moulay Ismail. For his great service, King Philip V of Spain gave him a special title. In 1721, he became a Grandee of Spain. This was a very high honor.
In 1724, he became the president of the Spanish War Council. This was a very important job. He died in Madrid in 1725. His only son, Emannuel de Bette, became the 4th Marquess of Lede. However, he did not have any children. So, the title of Marquess of Lede ended with him.
