Jean Peyrelevade (born 24 October 1939) is an important French politician and business leader. He has worked in both government and big companies.

Jean Peyrelevade's Political Ideas

In 1981, Jean Peyrelevade became a key helper to the French Prime Minister, Pierre Mauroy. He advised on economic matters and helped manage parts of the government-owned businesses.

He used to teach economics at a famous school called École Polytechnique. He has also written about how modern capitalism works. In his 2005 book, Le capitalisme total, he talked about his concerns. He believed that some parts of capitalism had gone too far. He suggested that companies should not give special stock options to their leaders. This would help make sure decisions are fair. He also thought companies should pay out less money to their shareholders. This would help stop too much buying and selling of shares just to make quick money.

Supporting Political Leaders

Jean Peyrelevade supported Francois Bayrou in the 2007 French presidential election. He joined Bayrou's team to help shape their economic plans.

In the 2008 local elections in Paris, Peyrelevade led the Democratic Movement party. He was elected as a local councilor. Later, he became a vice president of the party. However, he left these roles in 2009. Today, he doesn't belong to a specific political party. But he is still active in a group called Terra Nova, which shares ideas for the government.

Ideas for the Economy

In 2009, Jean Peyrelevade wrote an article suggesting that banks should be split into two types. One type would handle people's savings, and the other would handle big investments. He believed that banks are a public service. He thought they should be managed carefully to prevent big money problems.

In 2011, he first supported François Hollande for president. But later, he changed his mind and decided to support Francois Bayrou again. He felt Bayrou's ideas were clearer.

In 2012, Peyrelevade shared his thoughts on how France could make its economy stronger. He believed that people's wages should not grow too fast. He also thought that the 35-hour workweek, which was introduced in 2000, made France less competitive. He felt that other countries, like Germany, were doing better at managing their economies. He wanted to see more factories, new ideas, and more support for private businesses. He also believed that French laws about hiring make wages too high. This can make it harder for companies to hire new people.

Jean Peyrelevade's Business Career

Even though he worked with left-leaning governments, many business people respected Jean Peyrelevade. He was chosen to lead several large companies that were controlled by the French government.

  • From 1983 to 1986, he was Chairman of the Suez Company.
  • From 1986 to 1988, he led Stern Bank.
  • From 1988 to 1993, he was in charge of the Union des assurances de Paris.
  • From 1993 to 2003, he led Credit Lyonnais, a big bank.

Disneyland Paris Agreement

In 1985, Jean Peyrelevade played a key role. He helped the French government make a deal to build Disneyland Paris.

Work at Crédit Lyonnais

Jean Peyrelevade became the chairman of the French government-controlled bank Crédit Lyonnais in 1993. Before he joined, in 1991, the bank had bought an insurance company in California called Executive Life. This company was having financial problems.

Today, Jean Peyrelevade works at a European investment bank called Leonardo & Co. He is the chairman of its board. He also serves as a director for other important French and European companies. These include Bouygues, DNCA Finance, and BG Bonnard & Gardel Holding SA. He is also on the supervisory board of KLM, an airline.

Jean Peyrelevade is also a member of a group called Le Siècle, which is a think tank.
