Jeanna Petyarre facts for kids
Jeanna Petyarre (born in the 1950s), also known as Jeannie Petyarre, is a talented Aboriginal artist from Central Australia. She comes from a family of famous artists, including Kathleen Petyarre, Ada Bird Petyarre, and Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Jeanna's beautiful artworks can be found in important places like the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and the Holmes à Court Collection in Perth. Her art is also part of many private collections around the world.
Jeanna's Early Life and Art Journey
Jeanna Petyarre was born around the 1950s. Her birthplace was Boundary Bore, a small community on the Utopia homelands. This area is about 270 kilometers northeast of Alice Springs.
Jeanna started her painting career in the 1980s. Her art often shows traditional plants that her people gather. These plants, like the Bush Yam and Bush Medicine Leaves, are used for food and healing. Jeanna's aunt, Emily Kngawarreye, encouraged her to paint her family's Dreaming stories. These stories are special artworks that share important cultural knowledge. They include themes like Bush Medicine, Bush Yam Dreaming, and Wildflower Dreaming.
In 1988, Jeanna joined a group of women artists. They began creating art using a special technique called Batik. Batik is a way of dyeing fabric, originally from the Indonesian Islands. Aboriginal artists in Australia made this craft their own. Jeanna and the other women used desert designs on silk and cotton fabrics.
