Early Life and Family Background
Jeanne Theoharis grew up in Fox Point, Wisconsin. Her father, Athan Theoharis, was a professor. Her mother, Nancy Artinian, was an activist.
Jeanne has two siblings. Her sister, Liz Theoharis, helps lead the Poor People's Campaign. Her brother, George Theoharis, is also a professor.
Jeanne Theoharis's Career and Studies
Jeanne Theoharis studied at Harvard College. She earned degrees in Afro-American and Women's Studies in 1991. Later, she received her PhD from the University of Michigan. Her studies focused on American Culture.
Today, Professor Theoharis is a Distinguished Professor at Brooklyn College. This means she is a highly respected and important teacher there. She teaches about how race and gender affect politics. She also studies social policies, city life, and African American history.
Books and Awards
Jeanne Theoharis has written many books and articles. These works often explore the fight for Black freedom. One of her most famous books is The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks. This book won an NAACP Image Award.
Her book A More Beautiful and Terrible History also won an award. It received the 2018 Brooklyn Public Library Prize.
Documentary Film Work
The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks was also made into a documentary film. Jeanne Theoharis helped as a consulting producer for the film. The documentary won a Peabody Award. It also received a Television Academy Honor Award.
Conversations in Black Freedom Studies
In 2013, Professor Theoharis helped start a special program. It is called Conversations in Black Freedom Studies. This program takes place at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Each month, scholars and writers meet to discuss Black history. They often talk about new books in the field.
