Jeannie Longo is a famous French racing cyclist born on October 31, 1958. She is known for her amazing career, winning many races. Jeannie was a French champion six times and a world champion thirteen times! She started racing in 1975 and continued until 2012.

Jeannie was once thought to be the best female cyclist ever. She was very competitive and raced for a long time. For example, when she competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, it was her seventh time at the Olympics. Some of the other cyclists in that race were not even born when she first competed in 1984! She said that 2008 would be her last Olympics.

In the Women's road race at the 2008 Olympics, she finished 24th. She was just 33 seconds behind the winner, Nicole Cooke. Nicole was only one year old when Jeannie first rode in the Olympics. In the same Olympics, Jeannie finished fourth in the road time trial. She was only two seconds away from winning a bronze medal. Jeannie Longo is currently second on the list of French female Olympic medal winners. She has four medals, including one gold.

Early Life and Start in Sports

Jeannie Longo was born in Annecy, a town in the French Alps. This area is known for its beautiful mountains.

She first started her sports journey as a skier. She was very good at it, winning French school and university ski championships. Her coach, Patrice Ciprelli, who later became her husband, encouraged her to try cycling. She quickly became a top cyclist. Within a few months, at age 21, she won the French road race Championship. She competed in both road and track events. She has an Olympic gold medal and many world championship titles.

Questions About Fair Play

During her long career, there were times when questions arose about following all the rules in cycling. In 1987, after trying to set a world record, Jeannie had a positive test for a substance called ephedrine. She was not allowed to compete for one month because of this.

Later, in 2011, there were reports that Jeannie had missed three doping tests. This usually leads to a penalty. However, the French Anti-Doping Agency had not told her she would be tested that year. So, no further action was taken against her for missing those tests.

It also came out that her husband, Patrice Ciprelli, had bought a substance that was not allowed in sports. He said he bought it for himself. He was found responsible for this in 2016.
