Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jeehiun Katherine Lee is a smart scientist who studies chemistry. She is a professor at Rutgers University, where she teaches and leads a research lab. An organic chemist studies chemicals that contain carbon, which are found in all living things.

Even though she started as an organic chemist, Professor Lee also explores biological chemistry. This means she studies how chemicals work inside living things. She uses special tools like mass spectrometry, which helps her weigh tiny molecules, and computer modeling, where she uses computers to understand how chemicals behave. This helps her learn about how chemicals react and how some things can speed up those reactions.

Her Scientific Work

Professor Lee and her team combine different ways of studying chemistry. They do experiments in the lab and also use computers to understand how chemical reactions happen. They focus on reactions that are important for both chemistry and biology. She was one of the first scientists to use tools like mass spectrometry and computer modeling to solve problems where chemistry and biology meet, especially when studying how reactions are sped up.

Her Education

Professor Lee earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, from Cornell University in 1990. She graduated with very high honors, which is called summa cum laude.

She then went on to get her PhD in organic chemistry from Harvard University in 1994. A PhD is a very advanced degree that shows you are an expert in your field.

From 1995 to 1997, Professor Lee was a special research fellow at UCLA. This means she continued her research after her PhD, working with another famous scientist named Kendall N. Houk. This fellowship was supported by the NIH, which stands for the National Institutes of Health.

Besides her research, Professor Lee also teaches chemistry classes. She teaches organic chemistry to college students and more advanced organic chemistry to graduate students.

Awards and Honors

Professor Lee has received several important awards for her work:

  • She won the American Chemical Society PROGRESS/Dreyfus Lectureship Award.
  • She received the NSF CAREER Award for her studies on how nucleotides (building blocks of DNA and RNA) react.
  • She was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, which is a special honor for young scientists.
  • She received an award from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for her excellent teaching of college students.
  • She is a member of the Sigma Chi Scientific Honor Society, which recognizes top science students.
